In its seventy-eighth year, Rupa is proud to present one of its most exciting lists yet. Comprising new work by established talent, as well as some of the most promising young writers at work today, the books we will be publishing in the first half of 2014 should appeal to readers and bibliophiles everywhere. This year sees the launch of a series celebrating the writings of the great masters of Indian literature: Timeless Malgudi: The Very Best of R.K. Narayan, the first book to be published, will be followed by similar anthologies featuring the works of Ruskin Bond and Abdul Kalam. We are thrilled to be publishing new work by some of the finest fiction writers in the country—The Country is Going to the Dogs by Anurag Mathur, bestselling author of Inscrutable Americans, to Mumbaistan: Anti-Social Network by acclaimed film director Piyush Jha; Residue, the debut novel by Nitasha Kaul, shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize, to Advantage Love and Scandalous HousewivesMumbai by Madhuri Banerjee, acknowledged queen of romance fiction. We are also publishing exciting work by a whole range of fresh talent—Anuja Chauhan has put together An Atlas of Love, a collection of short stories on romance featuring new writers; Vanishing Act and Other Stories is a powerful debut novel by Nepali writer Prawin Adhikari; and the Urban Shots series showcases vignettes of the lives of young people in contemporary India.
In non-fiction, we are delighted to present books by such illustrious personalities as Gloria Steinem, writer, speaker and feminist icon; Shivraj V. Patil, former home and defence minister; Natwar Singh, former cabinet minister and outspoken politician; Sidin Vadukut, bestselling author of the Dork series; Ram Jethmalani, Rajya Sabha MP and eminent lawyer; S.Y. Quraishi, former chief election commissioner of India; Hasan Suroor, prominent journalist with The Hindu; and Minhaz Merchant, pioneering editor and publisher.
This year in Red Turtle, our children’s imprint, we are thrilled to publish beautifully illustrated and designed books such as Babayan, by Kiku Adatto; The Tigers of Taboo Valley, by Ranjit Lal; and translations from Satyajit Ray entitled The Magic Moonlight Flower and Other Stories.
Finally, we are proud to bring back into print classics that have stood the test of time—from Hugh Allen’s The Lonely Tiger, to beautifully illustrated collector’s editions of Kipling’s Jungle Books as well as a series of short fiction by masters such as Chekhov, Maupassant and O. Henry, compiled by Terry O’Brien.
